KNG199ICW error codes and safe responses

Model-specific fault labels, reset limits and qualified-service guidance for KNG199ICW.

Covered models: KNG199ICW

Safety comes first

If you smell gas, do not try to light an appliance, touch electrical switches or use a phone in the building. Call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow their instructions. If the supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department. Installation and service belong to a qualified installer, service agency or gas supplier.

E5 or C4: special blocked-vent warning

For E5 or C4, the manual instructs you to CLOSE the gas valve at the manual shut-off point, then check vent terminations for obstructions. If none are found, it says to press POWER to reset. If the code persists, call a qualified service technician or the gas supplier. Do not repeatedly reset, dismantle venting or improvise a gas-reopening sequence; get qualified help when the next step is unclear.

Minor issues are not all faults

For minor problems, the manual describes pressing POWER on the front panel, or turning the faucet off and back on. It gives no five-minute waiting interval for this model. This does not override the gas-odor instructions or the E5/C4 warning.

Service-only entries and label differences

The manual also lists E9 (Water Valve Failure), CB (Bypass Water Valve Failure) and controller faults A0–A5. E9 and CB are marked as not displayed in its Appliance Servicing inventory. Do not enter service mode to diagnose them. The troubleshooting chart calls E3 “Thermistor Open Circuit”; the service inventory calls it “Thermistor Failure”. These labels are retained as source distinctions, not separate homeowner diagnoses.
